1775: American Revolutionary War begins – Lexington Common, shot “heard round the world”

1882: Charles Darwin, who developed the theory of evolution through natural selection, dies at age 73.

1897: The first Boston Marathon is held. Winner John J. McDermott runs the course in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 10 seconds. Today the Boston Marathon ranks as one of the world’s most prestigious road racing events in the world.

1943: Thousands of Jews living in the Warsaw Ghetto begin an uprising against Nazi occupation forces after they discover they will be moved to the gas chambers at Treblinka. By the time the Nazis crush the revolt on May 16, more than 40,000 Jews had been killed or deported.

1987The Simpsons first appear as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show.

1993: The siege at Waco, Texas ends when FBI agents stormed the Branch Dividian sect compound. More than 70 cult members, including and their leader, David Koresh, die in a fire that breaks out when the federal officers try to end a 51-day siege.

1995: Timothy McVeigh set off a truck full of explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.
