Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has name Brenda Lucki as the Royal Mounted Police’s first female chief commissioner.
The 32 year veteran will take over as the 24th commissioner in mid-April.
The RCMP are facing mounting scrutiny following accusations of sexual harassment within its ranks. The previous commissioner, Bob Paulson, retired last June last year after some five years in the position. During his tenure, Paulson apologized as the national police force reached a settlement agreement over a series of harassment, discrimination and sexual abuse claims that deeply embarrassed the force.
Lucki, who will head the force of 20,000 Mounties, said she was ready to challenge the system.
