1895: Joshua Slocum, from Briar Island, Nova Scotia, leaves Boston, Massachusetts, to begin his solo around-the-world voyage on an 11 metre sailboat called Spray. Slocum becomes the first person to solo circumnavigate the Earth, returning to Boston on July 3, 1898.
1942: Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables, died on this day.
2013: The Rana Plaza multistorey garment factory near Dhaka, Bangladesh callapsed, leaving more than 1,100 people dead, 2,500 injured, marking this one of the world’s worst industrial accidents. The factory workers produced clothing for companies ranging from Walmart to Joe Fresh.
