1521: After travelling three-quarters of the way around the globe, Portuguese explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan is killed during a tribal skirmish on Mactan Island in the Philippines.

1865: Steamboat “SS Sultana” explodes in the Mississippi River, killing as many as 1,800 of the 2,427 passengers. It is the greatest maritime disaster in United States history. Most of the dead were paroled Union POWs on their way home.

1967: Canada’s International and Universal Exhibition, also known as Expo ‘67, the World’s Fair, is opened in Montreal by Prime Minister Lester Pearson.

2010: South Korean Oh Eun-sun, 44, reaches the peak of Annapurna, becoming the first woman to scale the world’s 14 mountains with an elevation of more than 8,000 meters above sea-level. She is also the first Korean woman to climb the Seven Summits.
