The Canada Revenue Agency doesn’t need a death certificate to declare you dead. They can do it over the phone. And it happens quit often.

Between 2007 and 2013, the CRA declared 5,489 people dead when they weren’t.

The article states these people were “accidentally” classified amongst the no longer breathing. However, these large numbers suggest incompetence, not errors.

It’s a pain to become part of the living dead. Your benefits are cut off immediately and, in some cases, it can take months to bring you back to life.

If you owe the tax man and you were hoping to get out of paying by having them decalare you dead, it will not be that easy. The CRA requires a copy of the death certificate when they feel you owe them.
